Lower sixth ‘A’ level R.S. students were fortunate to be invited to a recent Ethics conference at Cheltenham Ladies’ College. The seminars included sessions on both Sexual Ethics and Euthanasia. Alice Sadler and Tamara Mohan had the privilege of attending an ‘Ethics Masterclass’ with Baroness Mary Warnock, a woman who has been at the leading edge of policy making around ethical issues in the U.K. for many years. Baroness Warnock spoke passionately and rationally about her wish that the law should be changed to allow assisted dying in the U.K. Students argued that this might leave elderly or otherwise vulnerable adults open to coercion or might be impossible to apply if a patient suffered mood swings (for example, when suffering from bi-polar illness). The Baroness sustained her argument saying that she thought sufficient ‘checks and balances’ could be put in place to prevent problems. She said, at present, legal forms of assisted dying are only open to the wealthy who can travel abroad to access specialist clinics there. The discussions on the day were both profound and thought provoking.
Introducing…
We aim to offer a rich curriculum experience which will awaken or extend pupils’ appreciation of religion as a vibrant force in human living. Our students are quick to recognise the importance of understanding a variety of faith stances even where they do not personally hold any of them. To enhance learning, numerous visits, visitors and opportunities for extended activities are provided. The department has led overseas visits to Israel, China, Poland, the Czech Republic and, most recently, to Holland, Belgium and France. Our Virtual Visitors
