This week L5 girls have been privileged to work with a local Muslim woman to explore perceptions of women in Islam and to explode some of the stereotypes and preconceptions that abound in the media. Dr Aisha Ahmad who is the Chief Executive Officer of the charity ‘All Sports Women’ raised awareness of the assumptions that are often made about Muslim women and their lifestyles. She encouraged girls to recognise that just as women of other faiths do not fit one ‘mould’ neither do those who are observant Muslims.
Aisha’s own life experiences certainly break the mould – she has represented Britain as part of the Muslim women’s football squad. Aisha’s charity promotes interfaith and intercultural dialogue through women discussing key issues and also through women playing sport.
