RS Lessons Encourage Girls to be Safe and Knowledgeable about the Dangers of Grooming and Radicalisation

Dr Aisha Ahmad, Chief Executive of the charity ‘All Sports Women’ and a Muslim herself has led two sessions for L5th girls aimed at raising awareness of the use of social media for grooming and radicalisation. Dr Ahmad focused on so called ‘Jihadi Brides’ from a variety of backgrounds (including a Christian girl) who had been targeted and radicalised.

The cases of Aqsa Mahmood,  daughter of an Edinburgh Cricket team player, who became an active blogger and recruiter for ISIS and Shermeena Begum, who left her family at the age of 15 to travel to Raqqa in Syria were particularly in focus.

L5th girls responded with excellent questions and clearly appreciated the need for raised awareness and constant vigilance around the influence of social media and beyond.
